Overall School Community
The High School was part of the Anti-Bullying Kick-Off event. Dr. Berckes will announce the three winners of the essay contest entitled “Be the Change”. October 22 was advertised as a “Jeans Day”. Students and teachers donated $2 and $5 respectively for the privilege of dressing down. Proceeds go to the high school SGO. Business The Business Club will be taking a survey today in all Period 1 classes. The officers of the club made up the survey and will compile the answers from over 600 students in the high school. There is a checklist that the officers created as well as a section for suggestions. The goal is to add some new merchandise to the store that our students want and need. Next week begins our after school service of selling healthy snacks for students who are involved in after school activities. We are officially registered with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs Consumer Bowl Competition. Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Bott are meeting with potential candidates prior to their final selection of five students for this year’s team. Last year, we were the Hudson County Champions. We are striving for a repeat and beyond! CEIP Career Education/Internship students attended a workshop sponsored by Berkeley College on October 15 entitled “Effective Conversations for College and Career Success”. Students have begun the application process to place them in various industries for the internship experience. English Students are actively involved in numerous writing contests including Voice of Democracy and a contest sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Council of Teachers of English. Results forthcoming. Fine and Performing Arts The Marching Band is sponsoring a clothing drive on October 23 and 24 to benefit local charities. Guidance/ Special Services Senior students have begun the process of applying to colleges. Many are working on developing their essays and requesting recommendations from teachers. Science The 'Mural' committee of the Science and Engineering clubs at SHS met this week to review potential sketches for the hallway mural project, set to kick off mid-November. All agreed to focus on pictures that interconnected the various disciplines of science and its practical uses. Students will be meeting in groups in the upcoming weeks in an attempt to finalize the first mural and present it to the administration. Dr. Daniela Riser, Science Department Chair, traveled to Trenton for a two day conference this week with the State Department of Education. She has been selected to participate in item selection for the upcoming New Jersey Biology Competency Test. Dr. Riser was able to acquire information about the upcoming test and the future plans for other such assessments. Co-curricular/Extracurricular The Junior Class of 2012 is sponsoring the annual Haunted High School on October 30, 2010. The SHS JSA was awarded five (5) Best Speaker Awards on Saturday Oct. 23rd during Fall Regional at Princeton University: Thomas Abramowitz; Pro: Resolved, that China is a stronger world superpower than the United States. Resolution passed, 64:19:1 Ryan Moreno-Vasquez; Con: Society through the eyes of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes: Resolved, that Americans view humans as inherently good.
